it would take an eternity to break us
No matter what they take from me, they can’t take away my dignity
Okay, so. When I was in the upper Standards in Catholic school as a girl, we were allowed to have a Christmas party in our class. And girls would “audition” to sing something at the party, and this girl Karen Charles auditioned once. There are two things I remember about Karen, a tall, light-skinned black girl who wore her hair in deliciously fat braids: once we had an impromptu gym class and she was disgruntled because everybody could see her neon orange bra under her regulation white shirt; and when she sang “The Greatest Love” as her audition piece, girls from other classrooms came and gathered around the door to listen. You could hear a pin drop. For a couple weeks after that we *all* wanted to be Whitney.
It’s so strange to think that she’s gone. When that “Whitney” show first started airing, I said that I kind of felt like people shouldn’t try to name things “Whitney” because it could only possibly be used to refer to Whitney Houston. I wasn’t even as devoted a fan as many others, but she will forever be the only Whitney to me.
