[Image: A gif of the mimosa pudica plant, slowly closing one of its fronds after being touched gently.]
the plants name is called “makahiya” and hiya in tagalog means “shy”.
whenever you touch the plants leaves, they immediately fold up together looking as if its really shy hence the name.
this put me in a good mood :’)
Why tf is this not in the US.. I’d have so much fun omg.
These are basically my entire childhood ;u; In rural El Salvador, they’re called “dormilonas,” something like “sleepy ladies.” Because they go to sleep, so to speak.
They close up quite a bit faster than shown in the gif.
In Trinidad these grow closer to the ground and more grassy, and are covered with teensy little thorns. Hence their name, “picker plant”, as in, “ah grab de plant and de picker chook me!”
Lol the Tagalog and Spanish names for it are so much more whimsical!
